National Take Our Children to Work Day

It started out as Bring your Daughters to Work day in 1992, and now having changed its name to include Sons, each year the educational non-profit organisation encourages parents to expose their children to business. It was originally designed to address self-esteem issues unique to girls and to address gender inequality, but now with a much wider purpose, employees across the world invite both sons and daughters to join them at work, encouraging children to see what their parents do each day.

Our children know we ‘go to work’, but what does it actually mean to them? We might point out our place of work as we drive past, but this still means very little to most children! But this day is about so much more than children gaining understanding of their parent’s career. It’s about being good role models to our children, demonstrating good work ethics, inspiring children to dream big and to envision a future for themselves in a workplace where everyone is welcomed*

Often bringing our children to work is from necessity rather than desire…. juggling childcare on inset days, days of sickness or when childminders or nurseries have let us down. But what if while they’re in our place of work they are taking onboard far more than we think. What if they adopt our leadership skills, gain new positive behaviours and influences, inspire to do something similar, or be something better? Most parents want their children to be successful in life, but even more so, we want them to be happy and confident in their choices. Watching a parent at work can show them in a new light, separate from the Mum and Dad who does bath time, cooks dinner, picks them up from school and cleans up after them!

Bringing your children into work needn’t be a distraction or a hassle, but an opportunity to be inspirational, to expose them to the real emotions behind work, how we feel, why we make the choices we make, and where our dreams lie.
