Speech Day

I went to my son’s Speech Day at his new school in July. I felt I wanted to be present to support the school & especially the children that do already attend & their impressive achievements. It happens to be the busiest period, we/I have ever had at Royall. The balance I/we usually have, is completely out of kilter, time is very precious. My amazing Husband has had a taste of what life is like on the ‘other side’; having asked him to be ‘me’ this week, so I can be there for the other ‘baby’ in our lives, my business, my passion. But, two long hours out of my day?! Really.

YES. Something was calling me to attend. I wanted to look ahead; to see what lies ahead for Thomas and us as parents as our son embarks on his exciting new chapter.

To also invite Thomas’s grandparents, who we are blessed to have; as incredible influences, role models and support structures. They play a huge part & influence in our children’s lives.

We were privileged to be in the company of two exceptional Leaders; the Head of the school and another Head of a well respected neighbouring school. Both in joint address to this truly special community, we are now a part of.

They spoke in a united voice about Humanity. Fostering an environment which helps the school children onboard the right skills, attitudes and behaviours, manners, and mindsets, that will navigate them to their ‘Best route of success’ (the school’s mantra), which ever that lane may be, for the ‘individual’ child.

This, truly unique and special ‘environment’ is born from the following core traits: Curiosity, Confidence, Kindness, A Global Mindset & Happiness!

These values, are greater than the sum of their parts. I feel education is only a part of a child’s future. Opportunity, independence, environment and creativity are all important contributory factors to a wholesome childhood, which is why we selected it so carefully.

Much like in the ‘workplace’ environment; my specialist subject, I feel Values are focused on too heavily. The world has moved on from this as indeed it has from ‘cultural fit’. What is fundamentally absent is the focus on Humanity, recognising that brand, tech and innovation savvy people, H.U.M.A.N beings, are no longer thankful to have a ‘job’, and appreciative of their salary. They want a ‘way of life’.

Therefore, if you are looking to attract the best, you must engage with them in a way that captures their hearts and minds. If you want to appoint them, you must foster carefully, every touch point, ensuring each communication and experience is as positive and respectful as it can be. Value future talent, as you do your most esteemed clients.

Furthermore, on-board them with due care and attention, & ultimately recognise that loyalty does not come from shouting about your profits, your culture, your margins, and accomplishments as a ‘Brand’.

Loyalty comes from doing good things for the good and the right people. Lose the bravado, your job does not define you. Your bio as a Manager and Leader should be authentic, about all ‘you are’ not simply what you ‘do’.

Give employees an opportunity to create more times for themselves, to focus on their destination point within your organisation, uncover their Purpose, and watch a ‘movement’ be born.

100,000 years ago, at least six human species inhabited the earth. Today there is just one. Us. Homo sapiens. How did our species succeed in the battle for dominance? Why did our foraging ancestors come together to create cities and kingdoms? How did we come to believe in gods, nations and human rights; to trust money, books and laws; and to be enslaved by bureaucracy, timetables and consumerism? And what will our world be like in the millennia to come?

For me, it will be a world where the Homo sapiens don’t have to ‘go’ to work, like me, they are ‘always there’ why? Because the workplace environment will be full of individual Human Beings, at their best putting their ‘passion to life’ and not themselves ‘to work’ with energy they do not use!

I named my business Royall, after my family. I knew I would have a new married name and family to be very proud of. So this was a way of always being close to my family who I hold in highest regard, and true to my heart – the values and ethics instilled in me by them.

HUMAN FIT; is the legacy I am creating for my children, is not a list of education, experience or skills you have gathered in your life, it is an energy force that will drive your goals and ambition forward.
